What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?
Manual lymphatic drainage is an advanced therapy in in which the practitioner uses a range of specialized and gentle rhythmic pumping techniques to move the skin in the direction of the lymph flow. This stimulates the lymphatic vessels and improves its efficiency. Your lymph system carries substances vital to your immunity and helps your body remove waste products.
It's a very gentle massage and the benefits of lymphatic drainage are considerable, particularly relevant in today's environment where many people are impacted by pollution, stress and weakened immune systems. The lymphatic system plays a vital role in the body by regulating the immune system. When the lymphatic system becomes compromised in any way – such as through stress, tension, injury, surgery or a reaction - lymphatic fluid builds up and stagnates. This causes the entire system to become quite toxic and the area impacted swells up. Lymphatic drainage clears blockages, eliminates metabolic waste and toxins from the body, helps in the transport of nutrient to the cells and increases metabolic efficiency - all adding to the reduction of excess fluid which can assist in weight reduction.
MLD is a non-invasive technique. It is very gentle and the massage is superficial to encourage lymph flow and not compress the vessels. It also has a very calming effect on the nervous system and helps relieve stress and tension. MLD is also a good beauty treatment – rejuvenating the face, improving the appearance of the skin and reducing puffiness. This helps rejuvenate collagen fibres and slow the aging process.
